Agent was announced by Sony CEO Jack Tretton at the company's E3 media briefing on June 2, 2009. It was confirmed that Agent will be developed exclusively for PlayStation 3 by Rockstar North, the team responsible for the Grand Theft Auto series. In a press release which followed, Rockstar founder Sam Houser commented: "We have always enjoyed making action games, and with Agent we are making what we believe will be the ultimate action game. Agent is a game we have wanted to make for a long time. The team in Edinburgh is doing an amazing job combining intense action, atmosphere and story in a great period setting to create something that feels quite unique. We cannot wait for people to experience this game."
It emerged recently that Agent was originally conceived in 2004 by Rockstar San Diego, the branch of Rockstar Games responsible for Midnight Club and Red Dead Redemption. At the time, Agent was being developed as a PlayStation 2 and Xbox title.
The release date for Agent has yet to be confirmed. The game is likely to arrive in 2011.
According to the initial press release, "Agent takes players on a paranoid journey into the world of counter-intelligence, espionage and political assassinations during the height of the Cold War at the end of the 1970s." Sony CEO Jack Tretton provided a similar description of the game, saying: "Agent will take a player across the globe amidst the shadowy world of espionage and assassins in the darkest hours of the late 1970s."
Agent will feature a variety of locations, as evidenced by Sony's use of the term "across the globe" when describing the game. One location that's likely to feature is Cairo, the capital of Egypt. An ex-employee from Rockstar San Diego, William Kidwell, stated in his resume (which has since been changed) that he'd been part of a team sent to Cairo to collect reference photos for the game. The resume stated: "Environment artist on Agent. Created city structures, textures, and props. [W]as also chosen to join a small team of artists for overseas photo shoot to gather reference in Cairo, Egypt. This small team of 4 gathered over 10,000 photographs of the city of Cairo within five days."
Agent will be available exclusively on PlayStation 3. The nature of the agreement between Rockstar and Sony is unclear, but don't be surprised if the game comes to Xbox 360 (and PC?) in the future. Most exclusives tend to be timed rather than permanent.
